Sciatica is a painful condition that can take a toll on your day-to-day activities. While anyone can experience sciatica, this condition usually affects adults aged between 30 to 50. Sciatica is a nerve pain or discomfort due to irritation, injury, or misaligned sciatic nerves-- the largest and thickest nerve in the body.

Sciatic nerves are made of 5 nerve roots: three from the sacrum (the final section of the spine); and two from the lumbar region. These roots are interconnected, forming the right and left sciatic nerves. They run through your hips, buttocks, and all the way down to your lower extremities.

Possible Causes

There are several possible causes of sciatica pain. Excess weight, poor posture, lack of exercise, or unsupportive shoes are all factors that can lead to sciatica. Keep in mind that sciatica may also be a symptom of a chronic spine disorder or health condition such as:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Herniated disc
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Infection
  • Injury
