Manual Therapy

What is MANUAL THERAPY?

Manual Therapy is also referred to as hands-on physiotherapy, manual therapy uses no devices or machines. Instead, physical therapists use their hands while performing skilled, specific hands-on techniques. In general, includes soft tissue work and mobilization/manipulation.

When performing soft tissue work, therapists apply pressure to the soft tissues of the body, like the muscles. This pressure can help relax muscles, increase blood circulation, break down scar tissue, and reduce or eliminate soft tissue inflammation.

With this therapy, physical therapists can also mobilize and manipulate joints. Mobilization/manipulation techniques assist to relieve pain, correct joint mechanics, and allow for an early return to exercises and daily function.

Increases blood flow

Moving and stimulating the area helps deliver nutrient-rich blood to the injured area to help the healing process.

Relaxes tense muscles

Therapeutic massage promotes a relaxation response from muscles that are often tense and spastic due to injury.

Improves range of motion

By using gentle and precise movements to activate joints and soft tissue, a therapist can restore functionality and improve mobility.
For greatest effect, manual therapy is often combined with other modes of treatment such as strength and stability exercises and active stretching. Our therapists can also provide guidance on safely performing exercises, active stretching and teach you how to do them at home.

Will manual therapy Hurt?

Manual therapy shouldn’t hurt, and it will be safe. But because you'll use the parts of your body that are injured or have chronic pain, the therapy can be challenging, even hard. For example, you may feel a bit sore after stretching or deep tissue massage. As long as it is performed by a licensed and experienced physical therapist, there’s nothing to be afraid of.
